When the sirens faded and the police car came to a stop at the gates of Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam, we didn’t know what to expect. The officers stepped in gently, and with them was a frail girl—barefoot, frightened, and in unbearable pain.

Her hair was matted like a scythe. A deep head wound had been left untreated for days—maybe months. Pus oozing from the gash, and worms crawling through her scalp. Her eyes were vacant, her body limp, her soul abandoned by a world that had turned away.

Without a second thought, our caregivers rushed her to the ashram’s in-house medical center. The wound was carefully cleaned, the infection treated, and with the help of doctors, we slowly began to bring her back from the edge of suffering.
